Cold fronts: the variety of types and the potential for severe weather

Cold fronts are a known hazard for yachtsmen and maritime professionals alike. On the 24th of March 1878 the naval training ship HMS Eurydice  sank in a snow squall, off the south coast of England, with the loss of 376 hands.

The sudden onset of severe weather was due to an  Arctic cold front. Arctic fronts are one example of the different types of cold fronts that affect the British Isles, all of which may produce hazardous weather, even in the summer months.

This talk will briefly review recent meteorological research on cold fronts highlighting the risk for hazardous weather.
