The Sailmaker's Whipping - How to prevent frayed rope ends.

Club Member Gaius Hiscox will be introducing how to prevent rope ends from fraying.  This is a practical session, pieces of rope and sailmakers needles will be available for you to ‘have a go’. 

If you have a rope that needs a whipping, bring that along.  A well executed sailmakers whipping will last years; witness the right hand rope in the picture that is about 20 years old with much usage.

Both laid and braided ropes can be finished in this way.  Whilst it is easier to whip a new rope, it is possible to ‘rescue’ ropes that have begun to fray, although you may have to lose a bit of length.
